NRCan Facts:
NRCan is an acronym for Natural Resources
Canada
Three-phase electric induction motors are
prescribed as regulated products under
Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations
(the Regulations). Natural Resources
Canada (NRCan) proposes to amend the
Regulations to:
Ê UÊÊÀiµÕˆÀiÊ `i>iÀÃÊ ÌœÊ Vœ“«ÞÊ ÜˆÌ Ê
more stringent minimum energy
performance standards (MEPS)
for electric motors, imported or
shipped inter-provincially for sale
or lease in Canada, and
Ê UÊÊiÝ«>˜`Ê Ì iÊ ÃVœ«iÊ ÌœÊ ˆ˜VÕ`iÊ
motors which were previously
excluded for the Regulations.
The legal text of the amendment is pre-
published in the Canada Gazette, Part I.
The revision to the Regulations comes into
effect April 12, 2012. This will mean that all
electric motors subject to the Regulations
that have their manufacturing process com-
pleted on or after that date will be required
to meet the stated efficiency levels.
